We want to shine a light on some of the exciting action coming up at Nest 1.0 - where we're really trying to cover all bases for up and coming ento-preneurs, old hands and newbies alike.

Former animal welfare inspector and now independent consultant Mandy Lucas teams up with invertebrate vet Ben Kennedy to run a unique session on the health and welfare of insects. With some inside and outside the sector still debating insect sentience - at UKEIA we're committed to building a professional agricultural sector that takes the welfare of our herds very seriously within the constraints of commercial pressures, and looks ahead to the issues that vets and even the Government will have to grapple with when this goes mainstream.

From practical welfare management on how to prevent diseases - to the best living conditions for insects and how heat, humidity and feed can all affect them greatly - this workshop will ask questions about the effective management of the health and welfare of farmed insects and how those standards should be maintained. We'll also consider how, when farmed insect protein becomes a recognised professional industry, its codes of practice, vet support, lists of notifiable diseases, etc. will be developed?

Greg Stepney - an intellectual property lawyer from the renowned European firm Withers and Rogers will share his knowledge on the way that researchers at the forefront of insect protein development can ensure that they protect their intellectual property. He tackles the question of designs, patents, data from our experiences and how they could be vulnerable trade secrets if not managed and protected. This workshop will examine how to make it in a competitive marketplace without spending the earth on patent lawyers - definitely worth a look if you've got ideas you need to protect.
